A new generation of Smart Cards
What is a friend? A single soul dwelling in two bodies.
Aristotle (384 B.C.-322 B.C.); Greek philosopher.
Madrid, August 26, 2003 - According to an article published at http://www.fcw.com/fcw/articles/2003/0825/cov-smart5-08-25-03.asp , the safest and most advanced credit cards used to date are kept secure through a magnetic strip and a chip. However, hybrid cards with two chips are already available.
Dual-interface technology gets the card information from the contact between the reader and the chip, as well as through a communication module that operates with a frequency signal. This last option does not require contact between the card and the chip. Cards bearing dual-interface chips are already in use some Europe cities.
Neville Pattinson, director of business development and technology at Schlumberger Ltd., says that he believes dual-interface technology will first take root in the commercial market. However, Pattinson and other industry executives affirm that acceptance in the government sector will be slower, because agencies are wary of new the technology's security. Therefore, one concern is that data stored on a dual-interface chip would be subject to snooping with a portable, wireless reader.
