image Spyware: IBIS LLC places hit on BillP Studios maker of WinPatrol image
Anti-Terror
Before we get to the meat of this attack on BillP Studios from IBIS LLC, makers of the WebSearch Toolbar, go and read our member reviews of Winpatrol. To date it is a product folks enjoy using and trust it. Today however, BillP posted in the official Winpatrol forum at CastleCops that he received a Cease and Desist letter. In fact IBIS makes quite the absurd claim: "We believe your product was developed with clear intention of harming IBIS, LLC, and preventing it from distributing its applications to users and interfering with its business relationships." Talk about conspiracy theories! So it is ok for a company to install spyware on consumer computers and yet it is not ok to inform folks of that? Bah humbug! Let your actions speak not legal counsel! Let us take a quick gander in our StartupList for TBPS.exe. Sure enough, there it is (source Doxdesk). Even a cursory Google search for the same filename brings up Uniblue Systems LIUtilities calling it spyware. This is yet another attempt in the fight that spyware makers are attempting to make against us spyware-critics. Well, we've banded together, and we're not giving in. So just close up shop and go home! Ben Edelman has an outline of all the threats sent out thus far available here. Eric Howes has picked this up at BBR.

It is indeed good to see that the Online Security Community are banding together in the fight against Spywares and the businesses which use them. It would be even better for the big companies such as Microsoft and Symantec, and organizations such as CERT and the United Nations to pow-wow with the best and the brightest in Internet Security to come up with a legal and genuine certification of all business practice softwares. This could be combined with the expertise and involvement of the Better Business Bureaus as well.

The idea of this is obvious. We need a legal standard for classifying all softwares in use on the Internet, one which promotes best practices in computing and business. It needs also to be a legal and standing, standard that governments in the free world can accept.

It would benefit everyone who uses, enjoys and does business on the Internet while promoting their safety and security, now and in the future.

Criminal and abusive activities limit the prosperity of everyone. It is incumbent upon the business and market leaders on the Internet to promote the health of the online marketplace.

Best regards

So after viewing the list of the absurd actions being taken against those that fight or just inform others about Spyware / Adware. I can only conclude that the Spyware and Adware companies want to play the role of terrorists of the computer world (as if they were not playing that role already). Let us hope then that Bush puts the Spyware / Adware companies on the list of bad guys in the war on terror.
