Spyware: IBIS LLC places hit on BillP Studios maker of WinPatrol
Before we get to the meat of this attack on BillP Studios from IBIS LLC, makers of the WebSearch Toolbar, go and read our member reviews of Winpatrol. To date it is a product folks enjoy using and trust it. Today however, BillP posted in the official Winpatrol forum at CastleCops that he received a Cease and Desist letter. In fact IBIS makes quite the absurd claim: "We believe your product was developed with clear intention of harming IBIS, LLC, and preventing it from distributing its applications to users and interfering with its business relationships." Talk about conspiracy theories! So it is ok for a company to install spyware on consumer computers and yet it is not ok to inform folks of that? Bah humbug! Let your actions speak not legal counsel! Let us take a quick gander in our StartupList for TBPS.exe. Sure enough, there it is (source Doxdesk). Even a cursory Google search for the same filename brings up Uniblue Systems LIUtilities calling it spyware. This is yet another attempt in the fight that spyware makers are attempting to make against us spyware-critics. Well, we've banded together, and we're not giving in. So just close up shop and go home!Ben Edelman has an outline of all the threats sent out thus far available here. Eric Howes has picked this up at BBR.
