We’ve had a few reports of Universities/Colleges being hit with some very targeted emails trying to get the userid and password of students. The email is usually along these lines.

Phishing
You are up in the middle of the night and instead of watching an infomercial on the latest greatest device to pick food from your teeth for the great low price of $39.99 in four three equal payments, your bank decides to send out an email alerting you to login and change your password for a $25 contest prize enrollment. But wait, there is more, you aren't fooled! So one asks oneself, what to do with this phish email?

Email it to pirt (at) castlecops (dot) com, or create a user account here, and copy/paste it into here. CastleCops investigates phish and works with authorities with the goal of getting successful prosecutions. Do not let these emails stop you from making an infomercial purchase anymore.

Victims increased by 57% over 2006, says Gartner; calls banking regulators 'asleep at the wheel'

More than 3.5 million U.S. adults lost money to phishing scams and online identity theft in the 12-month period that ended in August, a 57% increase over the previous year, a Gartner fraud analyst said today.

The bad news, said analyst Avivah Litan, didn't end there. About 3.3% of the 4,500 Americans polled in August said they had been victimized by a phishing attack and had lost money in the deal. In 2006, the figure was 2.3%.

Phishing
seafsee writes "It`s hard to believe that three years have passed since Robin wrote the series of articles about Claims of Christianity Used for Phishing.

An unexpected email this morning proclaimed that I had a private message in a forum I have contributed to exactly once. Waiting for me was a message with the subject being, Dear Child of God.

I`m sure I groaned or sighed out loud, or both, but the only witnesses would be the cats of the house in the next room and they are feigning sleep now. Being preached to at this hour wasn`t high on my priority list, but as I began reading further I realized I had stepped into The 419 Nigerian Zone!"

image PIRT has prevented over $150 Million US in Stolen Monies image
Phishing
Since May 2006, our Phishing Incident Reporting and Termination team has directly prevented more than $80 million in credit card losses, and indirectly an additional $75 million by working with our partners. We've shut down not only phish sites, but drops all the while preserving evidence for law enforcement. And we need your help by donating your time as handlers to keep on investigating phish crimes so we can continue to prevent even greater numbers.

PIRT right now is receiving around 47,000 unique phish submissions per month. Our PIRT handlers are doing amazing work and trailblazing new roads in phish investigations and intelligence.
