Programs either won't start or quit after appearently random intervals. IE sometimes opens, but it runs like a dial up connection and I have expanded DSL. When it doesn't open I just get a white screen with the blue band across the top, but no sign thats its attempting to open a page.
Sometimes when I attempt to open a folder I get the search flashlight for several seconds (5-15) before the folder diplays contents.
Thanx, Geronimo

Computer isn't running slow anylonger, however I'm still getting random program shutdowns and about half the time I try to open IE I get the white screen. I'll try to capture the error message.

Hello and welcome to CastleCops.
My name is km2357 and I will be helping you to remove any infection(s) that you may have.
I will be giving you a series of instructions that need to be followed in the order in which I give them to you.
If for any reason you do not understand an instruction or are just unsure then please do not guess, simply post back with your questions/concerns and we will go through it again.
Please do not start another thread or topic, I will assist you at this thread until we solve your problems.
Lastly the fix may take several attempts and my replies may take some time but I will stick with it if you do the same.
Sorry for the delay in replying, the forum is very busy. If you still need help, please post a fresh HiJackThis Log and an Uninstall List (instructions forthcoming)
Step # 1: Make an uninstall list using HijackThis
To access the Uninstall Manager you would do the following:
1. Start HijackThis
2. Click on the Config button
3. Click on the Misc Tools button
4. Click on the Open Uninstall Manager button.
5. Click on the Save list... button and specify where you would like to save this file. When you press Save button a notepad will open with the contents of that file. Simply copy and paste the contents of that notepad here on your next reply.

Sorry I took so long to reply, I had given up. I found your reply when I returned to close my request. However, since I have your attention now I will eagerly follow your instructions and check back everyday.
Currently I'm still having the problem where my games (Eve-Online and WarRock) close randomly. Also, I can get on EI but after a short time I get an error message saying EI has encountered an error and needs to close.
None of the virus software I ran found anything. (Adaware, Spybot, AVG and ESET). I did get a message from AdAware when I tried to update saying "update component unavailable". And I had to reboot my computer twice to get Control Panel to open. (thats never happened before and may be an isolated insodent.)
Thank you for your time, really!

| Quote: | | Currently I'm still having the problem where my games (Eve-Online and WarRock) close randomly. Also, I can get on EI but after a short time I get an error message saying EI has encountered an error and needs to close. |
Have you tried uninstalling and then reinstalling those games to see if that fixes the problem? Have you tried contacting Eve-Online's and WarRock's respective game companies (on their forums/support pages) to see if they can fix your problem(s) with the games?
| Quote: | | I did get a message from AdAware when I tried to update saying "update component unavailable". |
The version of Ad-Aware you have (Ad-Aware SE Personal) now is no longer supported by Lavasoft.
You'll need to uninstall the old version and download the latest version:
Ad-Aware 2008 Free
Before we can continue, I need to see a fresh HiJackThis Log.

I didn't contact the game companies because they worked fine for a year or more. Then, at the same time my problems started with IE, my games started shutting down randomly. I assume the problems are related to a single cause, I just can't find it.
DLed the new version of AdAware and ran it once. Here's the new HJT log:

NO! I have been sharing this computer with my family, but they're not supposed to install or download anything with asking me first. Appearently, someone forgot that rule.

Print out these instructions or save them into a notepad on your desktop, because you will not have internet access while in Safe Mode.
Reconfigure Windows XP to show hidden files:
To enable the viewing of Hidden files follow these steps:
- Close all programs so that you are at your desktop.
- Double-click on the My Computer icon.
- Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
- After the new window appears select the View tab.
- Put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Display the contents of system folders.
- Under the Hidden files and folders section select the radio button labeled Show hidden files and folders.
- Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide file extensions for known file types.
- Remove the checkmark from the checkbox labeled Hide protected operating system files.
- Press the Apply button and then the OK button and shutdown My Computer.
- Now your computer is configured to show all hidden files.
Step # 1: Download and Install SDFix
Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.
Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to %systemdrive%
(Drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix)
Step # 2: Add/Remove Programs
Go to Start-Settings-Control Panel, click on Add Remove Programs. If any of the following programs are listed there, click on the program to highlight it, and click on remove. Then close the Control Panel.
XpcSpy
Inside Chat Spy/InsideChatSpy
Step # 3: Remove Hijackthis Entries
- Run HijackThis
- Click on the Scan button
- Put a check beside all of the items listed below (if present):
O2 - BHO: (no name) - {3A9DB4A6-E29C-4AE8-9C44-B058941EB5D0} - C:\PROGRA~1\XSoft\xworking\IMon.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ICS] C:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ICS\ICS.dll" rdl
O23 - Service: Login Service (SystemLoginService) - Unknown owner - C:\Program Files\XSoft\xworking\sysrts.exe
- Close all open windows and browsers/email, etc...
- Click on the "Fix Checked" button
- When completed, close the application.
Step # 4: Delete bad services
Please open Notepad. Ensure that word wrap is turned off. Click on Format and make sure that there is not a tick next to Word Wrap. If there's one, click on Word Wrap to remove it. Copy and paste the following in the code box into Notepad:
| Code: | sc stop SystemLoginService
sc delete SystemLoginService |
Click on File > Save As....
In the File Name box, copy and paste in fix.bat
In the Save as type box, select All Files from the drop-down list.
Click Saveand save it to your Desktop.
Double click on fix.bat. A Command Prompt window will open and close quickly. That is normal.
Step # 5: Deleting Files/Folders
I need you to use Windows Explorer to delete the folders I have marked in Red(if found):
C:\Program Files\XSoft
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ICS
Step # 6: Boot into Safe Mode
You can go in Safe Mode by restarting your computer, then continually tapping F8 until a menu appears. Use your up arrow key to highlight Safe Mode, then hit enter.
Step # 7: Run SDFix
- Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
- Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
- It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
- Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
- When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
- Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
- Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum.
This final step should be done in Normal Mode.
Step # 8: Download and Run ComboFix
Please visit this webpage for download links, and instructions for running the tool:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/combofix/how-to-use-combofix
Be sure to save ComboFix.exe to your Desktop
Please ensure you read this guide carefully and install the Recovery Console first.
The Windows Recovery Console will allow you to boot up into a special recovery (repair) mode. This allows us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware. It is a simple procedure that will only take a few moments of your time.
Once installed, you should see a blue screen prompt that says:
The Recovery Console was successfully installed.
Please continue as follows:
- Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.
- Click Yes to allow ComboFix to continue scanning for malware.
When the tool is finished, it will produce a report for you.
Please include the following reports for further review, and so we may continue cleaning the system:
SDFix Log
C:\ComboFix.txt
New HijackThis log taken after SDFix and ComboFix have been run
Use multiple posts if you can't fit everything into one post.

All went well until I tried to delete "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ICS ". I received a message stating that the file could not be deleted because access was denigned. However I was able to delete it after I ran SDFix and the computer rebooted.

OK, I started ComboFix just as instructed. It did exactly what the guide said it would do until it shut down my computer and started it back up again. Once the computer came back on it went to a completely blue screen with the hourglass mouse in the center and remained there for 2 hours (I took a nap). I turned the computer off then back on and ComboFix opened in its little blue screen saying it was preparing a report. It remained there for 30 mins but nothing happened. I closed that box and here we are.
What now?
