A few days ago my CPU started getting stuck at 100%, explorer.exe seems to be the problem. When I researched online to see what to do to fix it, it was suggested that I try HijackThis. I ran the MRP programs but nothing seems to work. I have Ad-Aware, AVG, Window Washer, and Clutter Cleaner. I've also tried going into msconfig and services.msc and stopping some of the programs from automatically starting at startup, but that didn't seem to work too well either.

1. To do this open your HijackThis
   
   1. Click on Open the Misc Tools section or Config… button, depending on how you are set up.
      
   2. If you used the Config... option then click the Misc Tools tab
      
   3. Select Open Uninstall Manager , a list of your installed programs will be displayed.
      
   4. Select the Save List… button and save the file to your desktop.

Hi SA707,

Thanks for the logs, there are a couple of programs that I am not keen on, and at least one that is out-of-date and consequently vulnerable. I am going to get you to run a tool first but before you do please advise me what Firewall and what AntiVirus solutions you are using. I can see AVG but could not positively identify the firewall – better to ask is my motto as the only dumb question is the one that is not asked!

The way that I understand it is that you have a sluggish computer but no problems with unwanted adverts and the like? Is your computer permanently switched on by any chance?

Apart from advising me the Firewall/AV situations, I would like you to rename the HijackThis.exe file to some other name of your choosing perhaps ‘SA707.exe’, leave it in the same directory just change the file name

1. Please print these instructions as they will be needed later when Internet access is not available. First logon to your computer with an account that has Administrator privileges and download SDFix.exe from the following link and save it to your desktop: SDFix Download Link
   
   
2. Locate the sdfix icon and click to open it. If an Open File - Security Warning box opens, click on the Run button.
   A window will open asking where you would like to install SDFix to please accept the default location – typically ‘C:\SDFix’ and press the Install button.
   
   
3. Reboot the computer into safe mode.
   
   1. Select the Start button and then Turn Off Computer
      
   2. From the options, select Turn Off and, when the computer has shut down, switch off the power supply.
      
   3. After 10 seconds, restore the power supply and switch on the computer
      
   4. Some computers have a progress bar that refers to the word BIOS. Others may not let you know what is happening.
      
   5. As soon as the BIOS loads, or a single Beep is heard then begin tapping the F8 key on your keyboard. Do so until the Windows Advanced Options menu appears.
      
   6. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. If this happens, restart the computer and try again.
      
   7. When in Safe mode you will have your Desktop with the word Safe Mode in the 4 corners.
      
   8. Ensure that you use the same logon identity as previously used in Normal mode
   
   
4. Click on the Start button, click on the Run menu option, and either copy and paste or type the following into the Open : field: C:\SDFix\RunThis.bat then press the OK button and follow the on-screen prompt by pressing Y and then Enter .
   
   
5. You will be presented with screens advising you of the progress of the tool but please note that it can take upwards of 20 minutes to complete.
   
   
6. When the scanning process has finished you will see a new screen stating that you need to restart your computer in order to continue. Again follow any screen prompts and when the computer has rebooted the SDFix log will be open on the desktop with a copy in the SDFix folder

8. Please copy and paste this log into your next reply together with an updated HijackThis log using the renamed version.
