Hopefully, this is of historic interest only, now that MS has released the official patch. However, here's my story:
I have Win XP Pro, SP2. Several days ago, I used the exploit test, and found I was vulnerable (no surprise), so I downloaded and installed the hotfix patch, and also unregistered the shimgvw.dll file (and got an "unregistration successful" msg). Re-tested, and found I was supposedly not vulnerable (at least to the one exploit tested for).
However, I continued to see thumbnails for image files (but not for document files) when browsing in My Computer. Maybe I am misunderstanding something, but I thought the thumbnails would not be shown (an unfortunate side-effect of unregistering the .dll file). Also, when I popped in a CD of photos, I believe I got "open with Windows File and Fax Viewer" as one of the possible choices.
Anyway, I've installed the official patch, and now I'm off to uninstall the hotfix and re-register the .dll file.
