I have a question regarding undoing the unofficial workarounds/fixes for the WMF vulnerability. I successfully removed the hotfix but when I tried to re-register Shimgvw.dll I got an error message that the process had failed because the module couldn’t be found. My question is what do I need to do now, if anything? A file search of the c:drive shows Shimgvw.dll to be in the following three folders:

C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\Shimgvw.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\Shimgvw.dll
C:\WINDOWS\ServicePackFiles\Shimgvw.dll

Also, I decided to go went ahead and I installed the Microsoft official fix without a problem. However, I have no idea if Shimgvw.dll is doing whatever it is supposed to do or not. Thanks.

Chuck

The Windows/system32 directory is the main repository for Windows executables and library files. I'm wondering if it's the register command or the dll that couldn't be found. What was the exact cmd you entered? Perhaps paste the sequence from your cmd window. Also, could you re-try and post the exact error message here?

If shimgvw.dll is NOT in operation, you will be unable to see graphic files via Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. Other such applications (e.g. Google Desktop indexing) will also not work properly.
