Since you can't edit posts anymore, I'll edit my original entry this way:
This is no big deal, but in my original post where I said:
{Before you start -- I recommend if you have any kind of
Symantec (Norton) Firewall, you turn it off and turn on
your Windows Firewall.}
That should read:
{Before you start -- I recommend if you have any kind of
Symantec (Norton) Firewall, turn on your Windows Firewall first
and then turn the Symantec (Norton) Firewall off.}
[This avoids you being without any firewall at all, even for a minute
(which is all it takes for someone to 'enter' your PC)].

Greetings,
MekongDelta69
Are you saying that you're unable to edit the first post in this thread!? If so, you might want to have a word with Paul about that.
Or maybe have it as a Wiki article instead!? (Or is it already?)
I was also wondering if it would be an idea to replace "Newly Edited" in the title with the actual date of the most recent edit?
Kindest regards,

You are correct sir (to quote Ed McMahon!). Not anymore...
| Quote: | | If so, you might want to have a word with Paul about that. |
Already did. I sent him a PM mentioning the fact that you no longer can
edit [your own] posts and he said that's a new 'feature.' As of a couple
of months ago, you're only allowed 15 minutes to edit a just submitted post.
That's when I added the post I made above [Mon Jan 08, 2007 9:55 pm],
but then I thought I'd send him the change directly and asked him to edit
the original post for me (which he did) about a day after I submitted
the above post.

It is already. Somewhere in this 13 page thread (of which I don't have
the time to search exactly where), somebody helped me set it up as a
Wiki article. We also decided to keep it as both (Wiki and a 'sticky'
on this forum), so more people would be able to see it (and judging by
the numbers, it seems to have worked out well that way).

in the title with the actual date of the most recent edit? |
That would be a good idea, except for the fact (mentioned above) that
I personally can't edit (nor can anyone else) anything anymore.
My most recent edit (i.e. the one I did personally) is noted on the
bottom of the original post (as they are in all posts), but since you can't
personally edit anymore, it's sort of a moot point now.
Thanks,

Very weird -- an auto double-posted message above:
(Wed Jan 17, 2007 6:35 am and Wed Jan 17, 2007 8:59 am)
Never saw that before.
Wish I could delete one of them... _________________ TF-116 Gamewarden (PBRs) RivRon 59 -- 'Nam '69

Try this:
1. On the left hand side of the Windows Update page, click
"Use Administrator Options."
2. Under "Update Multiple Operating Systems," click
"Windows Update Catalog" at the end of the sentence.
3. A new browser window will open up and on the left hand side,
click on "Windows Update."
4. Click "Scan for Update."
5. Once the scan is complete, click on "Install."

Posted: Thu Jul 26, 2007 8:49 pm Post subject: MS Update & .NET Fixes |
|
|
I am copying this here from my post in another thread. Hope it helps someone else as it did me.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have been dealing with Microsoft on these issues for weeks now, and came up with fixes for both (at least on my system). Below I am copying in the MS Update fix that worked for me. Below that I am copying in an exerpt from an email I sent to my MS support person regarding how I finally fixed the recent .NET update issues that so many people are having. I hope these help others.
Be sure to back up your data and do a system restore point before trying these fixes. A note: Some are having an "Administrator' rights issue, even though they are logged on as an Administrator. Go into Safe Mode and be sure you have administraor rights to the Windows Temp folder and the Software Distribution folder. This has been an issue for some.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
MS Update fix: (emailed to me from MS Support)
Let's follow these steps to resolve the issue.
Step 1: Preparative steps
========================================
Note: If you are using Windows XP Home Edition, please log on to Safe Mode to take ownership.
------------------------------------
In order to narrow down the cause of the issue more efficiently, let us restart the computer in Safe Mode to see if the problem also occurs in the mode that loads the system with the minimum amount of programs and devices. Please follow the instructions below:
1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple Operating Systems, you can press the F8 key when you see the boot menu.
2. When the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, select Safe Mode, and then press Enter.
3. Log onto Windows by using the Administrator account or any user account with the Administrator privileges.
NOTE: In Safe Mode, your system display and desktop will look and perform differently than in Normal Mode. This is only temporary. To go back to Normal Mode, we just need to restart the computer.
Step 2: Take ownership of SoftwareDistribution folder
========================================
1. Click Start, click Run, and type in "%windir%" (without the quotes) and press Enter.
2. Right-click SoftwareDistribution and then click Properties.
3. Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message (if one appears).
4. Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.
5. In the Name list, click your user name, or click Administrator if you are logged in as Administrator, or click the Administrators group. If you want to take ownership of the contents of that folder, select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.
6. Click OK, and then click Yes when you receive the following message:
You do not have permission to read the contents of directory folder name. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control?
All permissions will be replaced if you press Yes.
Note: Folder name is the name of the folder that you want to take ownership of.
7. Click OK, and then reapply the permissions and security settings that you want for the folder and its contents.
Step 3: Rename the SoftwareDistribution folder
=========================================
1. Click Start, Run, type: "notepad C:\register.bat" (without quotations) and press Enter. Choose Yes when you are prompted.
2. Copy the following commands and then paste them into the opened Notepad window:
net stop wuauserv
ren %windir%\SoftwareDistribution SD.old
net start wuauserv
3. After pasting the above commands, please close the Notepad window. Choose Yes when you are prompted to save the file.
4. Click Start, Run, type: "C:\register.bat" (without quotations) and press Enter to run the commands we have pasted.
If the issue persists, I will involve a high level engineer in our case.
Please try the above steps and let me know the results at your earliest convenience. If there are any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me.
I look forward to hearing from you.
Best Regards,
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I would suggest printing out Kb923100 and downloading all of the software mentioned, saving to individually named folders on your desktop so you don't get confused as to which program to run when. Also find and download .NET 3.0, I believe there is a link on Kb 923100 page. Be sure that the problem 1.1 and 2.0 updates are downloaded to your systen (gold shield in system tray). Install these in the proper order by chosing "custon install" and choosing only the one needed during the process.
.NET update problem fix: (email excerpt to MS Support).
I just thought I should write to inform you that I have fixed the issue of the latest .NET 1.1 and 2.0 installation problems that I had mentioned during the MS Update support issue, hoping this might help you with support of others with the .NET issue.
I used Kb923100 with some additions. I was unable to uninstall the .NET programs with Add/Remove so I simply used the MS uninstall tool, restarted and then went on to the re-installs. Per the re-install directions, I installed everything in it's numbered order. During the 1.1 re-installs I installed the latest 1.1 fix that has been an issue, prior to moving on to the 2.0 re-installation. During the 2.0 re-installation sequence I installed the latest 2.0 fix. Though not mentioned in this Kb article, I also re-installed 3.0. I performed any restarts as instructed during the installs. Finally I went to MS Update and got any updates that showed. Everything is working fine now.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Again, I mention that these fixes worked on my system. XP Home, SP2 fully updated up to the problem .NET updates. Good luck to all. I know these issues are a pain. I also hope that my instructions are clear enough.

Just as a caveat:
The post above this one applies to Win Home XP SP2, which may
or may not be the same for Win Pro XP SP2 (regarding any Registry
entries) -- to which the subject of the original post I wrote referred.
