I was recomended the XP upgrade as being more 'stable'.. HA!! and 'faster' .. HA!!! than Win2k.

Programs take twice as long to open (then often crash), windows explorer almost ground to a halt, CPU usage 100% etc.etc.

Thanks to the above advice it's like being back on a Mac Smile Thanks all.

PS. found thread also on google

Thanks - cured my problems - I have bridged wireless to ethernet networks together, and assume that the reason for the insane overhead was that it tried to index all files/drives/pc's it found on the network(s) - doh! Cheers, David

The indexing service is a great attribute, but if it comes at the overhead of 100% CPU usage, it bites the bullet. I wonder if microsoft is aware of the issue? Seems they wouldn't enable this if they knew about the overhead..?

Or maybe it only happens on Centrinos? Anyway, I also found this thread on google for this issue.

I wasn't having crash problems, but it was really bugging me that my CPU usage was going up to around 80% all the time, and staying there. CIDAEMON was always the culprit, it seemed.

Foillowed the advice of the thread, so thanks! Will see over the week if this has any effect on file retrieval -- if I find any problems, I'll write back.

Thanks again!

For you Swedish users out there in swedish XP the service is named "Indexing Service".

And is described as "Indexerar innehåll och egenskaper för filer på lokala och fjärranslutna datorer; erbjuder snabb åtkomst till filer tack vare ett flexibelt frågespråk."

And the process file is located in "C:\WINDOWS\system32\cisvc.exe"

Find all this in "Kontrollpanelen/Administrationsverktyg/Dator hantering/Tjänster och program/Tjänster"...

Had the same problem. Thanks once more, Rob, for your answer. Glad I tried Google.
What kind of crap is this from Microsoft? Does anyone know how they respond to this?
