I was wondering if the cidaemon.exe process was related to this problem, and if there are supposed to be 2 of them running at the same time. Because occasionally this process's memory usage spikes on me and effectively locks my workstation. please help if you have any info on my problem.

Apparently cidaemon is the actual indexing service, if you have it running, and cisvc is the moitoring tool which makes sure it doesn't use excessivly stupid ammounts of system resources. Keeps it under 40mb i think.
Ironic that the monitoring tool screws you more than the actual service, eh?

i think that it's taking a long time because your hard drive is so big, so indexing service takes a long time to index everything so that when you search it will work faster

Count me in as another who has been suffering through freezups, not responding and 100%cpu usage.
Really appreciate the help.
There are probably thousands out there who haven't yet tracked the problem to this area. Dell support knew nothing about it!

I found this thread cos cisvc.exe seemed to freeze TurboCAD from starting up - seemed to be a conflict with JPG.dll ? Anyhow, followed the thread and disabled this - thanks for the tip.

So what you really should do is turn of the indexing service, so you don't get a security hole due to the memory leak...

For those of you that had two instances of the program running:
I discovered this on Google as well

---
According to this, there is a keylogger of the same name running around loose, out there.

Personally, I never trusted XP. I am happy to be un-sassared un-SVCHOSTED, and un-cisvced with 98.

After seeing 3 pages of thank you's, I couldn't resist.

Thank you. I appreciate the info, Syngenuity!! Smile

Also Googled to this thread! Lucky for Microsoft that the internet came along so we can help ourselves. Or perhaps luck for us, since we didn't have to pay MS for support calls or contracts. Wink

One more thank you!

In my case, the problem was related to a flash memory card reader/writer attached via usb 2.0. I could cancel cisvc.exe through task manager and get cpu usage down. OR I could unplug the reader, in which case the cpu usage went down and cisvc ran without problem. (I had already turned off the indexing for my hard drive.) The solution presented here is preferable.

I also wonder if this is related to a problem detailed here: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;833228&Product=winxp MS says they have a hotfix, but you have to ask for it. I didn't want to risk paying megabucks for their support, so I've taken the route described in this thread.
