Compare Product Reviews in this ClassNORTON ANTIVIRUS IS JUNK!!!!
Norton DESTROYS operating systems by corrupting C:/windows/system 32 files upon uninstalling the program. I have worked on several systems yielding similar results. Norton does not offer an uninstaller in its package. Why Don't they??? If a person uninistalls Norton through the Control Panel.....LOOK OUT...You may not be able to start windows without going through SAFE MODE. Even then, you may still wind up with NAV.exe is missing or some stupid error which will not allow you to go into windows normally. You will have to go to Symantec just to try to uninstall it. Even when I went to the Symantec site, the attitude was that I DID SOMETHING WRONG....WHAT..EV..ER!! I actually applied the given technique to remove Norton properly (so to speak) and NOTHING happened...SAME PROBLEM! Norton also has a nasty habit of plugging up the registry.( examples: NAV,SYM,SYMANTEC,NORTON..etc) I counted over 1,000 entries...TOTALLY UNECESSARY!! AVG FREE uses a fraction of what Norton does and runs amazingly well...By the way, all you need is SYGATE or ZONE ALARM free version to run with AVG...works much better than SNORTIN' NORTON!!!
Even when Norton is 'so-called' running properly, it acts like a 'PARANOID MOTHER HEN' by constantly monitoring and checking all computer activities...USING up system resources...I.E. RAM, in the background.(WANT A SLOW COMPUTER ANYONE???????????????)
Someone must be writing code (ie. viruses) to confuse some of the AV detection files as I worked on some ones computer with Norton 2003 AV which had become corrupted by 34 viruses (6 Trojans, 7 Worms, and the rest were JS and other viruses) NICE WORK MR.NORTON!! The fellow with the installed NAV had no idea that his computer was 'possessed', so to speak. He was also running the Norton firewall (Security Center) to no avail.
GEE, I wonder if that is why he had windows opening and closing sporatically, and the 'twitchy' mouse syndrome, and his e-mail disappearing and files being re-named....HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM!!
NICE WORK MR.NORTON.....I GIVE YOU (8 out of 10) for causing grief and turmoil. You should have sticked to DOS systems when you had a good idea. I suppose that the windows infrastructure was just too overwhelming, or maybe you should just hire some new tekkies who know their code!!
Sincerely
JIM (Computer technician)

Norton AntiVirus Pro Posted by iamubiquitous on 2004-10-30 07:14:54 My Score:
Flame, flame, flame...most of the problems you describe, to my experience, are inherent to so-called ''cracked'' versions and although nsw can, (and does!), cause system slow-down during certain processes, it is the result of a more thorough and careful execution of the assigned tasks the soft performs. This results in a more stable os and better program execution with faster boot recovery rates and improved disk access rates. I have been using the latest version available since 1999 and had tried and rejected full versions of every utility on the market prior to trying nsw and until somebody does it better, I''ll stick with Peter''s engine...in conjunction with a few other type-specific malware removers, such as adaware se pro v.1.05, and I have had no significant damage done to ANY of the some 70+ machines I maintain for private users all over southern cal. Bravo! I say to Peter Norton: Bravo!

Norton AntiVirus Pro Posted by ajwixson on 2004-10-22 09:35:53 My Score:
I have run 2004, and 2004 Pro.
I found Pro a little slower, but with any decent computer, configured with common sense, I didn''t notice it.
I now run Norton Anti-Virus 2005.
I love it.
I have seen NO problems, except for a slower boot, that can be configured if you read the instructions.
Other software, that works well with 2004, and 2005 is as follows:

JHeater, I recommend Kaspersky 5.0 (www.kaspersky.com). The database is also updated every 3 hrs and not every Wednesday like Norton does.

While I would tend to agree that Norton''s AV and security products have become monstrously bloated and are a source of woe for me as well when I encounter them, you also need to know that there is an uninstaller provided with the program. Using the Add/remove programs is not some separate microsoft uninstaller program. It merely invokes the software''s own uninstaller application. So, regardless of whether Symantec put an uninstaller link conveniently in the start-menu programs list, you will find it in the add/remove programs, as it invokes the Norton uninstaller that comes with the program. All the add/remove entries do that. Windows itself doesn''t uninstall any program. Also, the Norton provided tools Rnis and Rnav are very useful for cleaning up the garbage in the registrt left by Norton 2K3 AV, and Internet Security. As for your friend who had all the viruses, he likely got one before Norton was updated enough to catch it, and it disabled his AV program in some way. Seen it many times before, and with multple programs. All of them are at the mercy of when the updater actually gets a chance to update the program, versus when that infected email comes knocking on the door. Once a virus is entrenched on the machine, the likelihood that it can be removed by a windows AV program updated after-the-fact, drops drastically, since many incorporate stealth or resistance techniques to try and prevent AV ware from removing an active infection. Removal attempts should take place outsode windows, or in safe mode for maximum effectiveness.
